Un soir de Gin - That Boutique-y Gin Company

ENGLISH VERSION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE

Home-made lasagna in the making.

On ouvre.

East London Liquor Company

FEW

Cotswolds : Plantu ! miam miam ! »

Merci Franck, c’était si bien <3

AN EVENING OF GIN

You may not know it, but I don't like Gin! I tasted several of them. Cheap supermarket stuff, more ambitious stuff found at a spirit merchant, craft stuff made in tiny quantities by passionate people… Nether worked. I cannot seem to appreciate it. So when I received a package full of samples from the brand-new That Boutique-y Gin Company (That Boutique-y Whisky Company's sister company), the first Gin independent bottler ever, I was almost disappointed that I couldn't share the enthusiasm that such an announcement can arouse among juniper lovers. It was counting without the devotion of my friend and colleague Sibylline who kindly sacrificed herself for me.
Franck

It's been days and days since Franck has entrusted me with "the boxes".
With a mission: drink content and tell.
So this is it…

Once upon a time, two medium-sized cardboard boxes.
10 vials-flasks-mignonnettes, wax sealed.
Inside? The friend Gin. The promise of many wonders.

Appointment is taken. My gin partner, the one with whom I share this passion of tonic and juniper will be there.
And there she is, her antipasti under in a bag (octopus, stuffed peppers, artichokes and arancini…).

Let's be organized !
How to proceed ?
Because we got work to do. Bread on the board and home-made lasagna in the oven. All set.

First step, "unboxing", as they say on the internet.
We open. Small descriptive cards, slipped into an envelope.
On each one: the gin in the nose, the taste of the gin, the what's left of the gin.

This is very practical : one sniffs, one tastes, one reflects, one notes.

It's like playing a board game where everyone wins.

This is our first tasting. We take a deeper look at the bottles. It's going to be a hell of a mess, scratching the wax of all the lids.
Please, do not laugh : the illusion is perfect. We really thought it was hard wax, my knife was out !
My sweatheart unscrews and says : See ? No scratching. VERY PRACTICAL.

We start. I found a measuring spoon. It's fancier that way, and above all, the shares are fair.

I do not know if it's an outrage, but we chose to work it out on a gin-tonic basis. Pure, we thought it might be too strong, unpleasant. We’re cocktail drinkers.
But we sniffed the stuff before the tonic, of course.

In order to know which ones to taste first, we use the tasting notes and the color of the proposed gins.
We put aside the ones with too much fragance, cherry type, chocolate, etc.
Straight to the point.

Tasting #1

Blackwater
The opinions are mixed, too many plants for S and M, and perfection for O which concludes: "I like the genépi, it makes me think of an Asian dish".
Indeed, she chews her gin-tonic, smiling.
And, it must be noted : we measured the gin but we put a bit too much tonic.
Maybe it's because it's the first try, it might have been a little less invasive at another position.

Tasting #2 (with less tonic> test and learn)

East London Liquor Company
The nose speaks first : "That one really smells like gin! "(You can tell the professionals are talking)
It is very, very good. We feel the citrus announced on the small card, it is subtle and fine. Classic but wonderful.
Thumbs up !

Tasting #3

FEW
The smell is downright odd.
Our three faces clenched.
Let’s not trust our noses. We’ve encouter food that did smell, but that was délicious..
But, we must say, it is not at all delicious. It feels AND tastes of anesthetic. The feeling remains. S and O pour their glasses into M’s, who doesn’t like to waste a good drink. Let’s give him credit for that.

Tasting #4

Shortcross
Then there was happiness. The return of joy
It feels like England, all of a sudden. We find ourselves sitting in a club chair. Just close your eyes, drink, and hear the pub’s TV with a sports game on. The Shortcross soaks us up with a british accent. I wanna throw away the lasagnas, I need fish and chips!

Let's admit at this point that the first glasses were drunk with enthusiasm but a little too fast.
Our eyes are very sparkly. It's like crying tonic and joy.

Note from the author: the rest of my notes are very succincts.

"Hernö is very good.
Cotswolds: Weedy! Yum, yum!"

Well, those two were very nice, if I trust my final "!".

I choose to finish with the Cherry Gin.
The color is beautiful, and I love cherry liqueur.
Oh, so many promises, and way too much sugar.
It's like a melted candy that stings the tongue.
Tiny disappointement, but I must say, the whole journey was insanely great !
We didn’t taste the 10 cute bottles. The next day, my migraine thanked me me.

As for the content, the small support cards with the tasting notes are really useful. It helps to find unknown aromas and flavours that might stay on the tip of the tongue. "AH, OF COURSE, IT'S CORIANDER!", "WATERMELON? UNBELIEVABLE!".

Thank you Franck, it was so nice <3

Sibylline
