Novembre est arrivé (et déjà presque reparti) et, comme chaque année, vous vous tâtez pour savoir si oui ou non vous succomberez à la tentation. Pour la septième année consécutive vous voyez fleurir, sur les réseaux sociaux et sur les sites de vente en ligne spécialisés en spiritueux, ces calendriers de l'avent et leurs mignonettes qui vous conduisent tout droit jusqu'à Noël. November has come (and already almost gone) and, like every year, you still don't know whether or not you will succumb to temptation. For the seventh year in a row, you can see these advent calendars and their samples on social networks and at online spirits web sites that will take you straight to Christmas. Armorik 10 ans

Ce n'est pas tous les jours qu'une marque de whisky fête ses 20 ans ! Et, lorsque cet anniversaire est également l'occasion de lancer son premier whisky à compte d'âge, autant marquer le coup. C'est ce qu'à fait Armorik en sortant son premier whisky de 10 ans d'âge. Un single malt qui fait désormais parti de la gamme permanente de la distillerie bretonne. Pour fêter ça comme il se doit, David Roussier (directeur de la distillerie Warenghem), son équipe et Carole Nicolas (Idées en forme) ont organisé une soirée sur le thème des accords gustatifs, mets et whisky, au restaurant L'Ami Jean dans le VIIe arrondissement de Paris, dans lequel Stéphane Jégo, le Chef, nous a ouvert sa cuisine et nous a fait partager sa passion pour le goût des bonnes choses.
You don't see really often a whisky brand celebrating its 20th anniversary! And when this anniversary is also the opportunity to launch its first age statement whisky, it is worth doing it the memorable way. That's what Armorik did by releasing its first 10 year old whisky. A single malt that is now part of the permanent range of the Breton distillery. To celebrate as it should, David Roussier (director of the Warenghem distillery), his team and Carole Nicolas (Idées en forme) organized a food and whisky pairing themed tasting at the restaurant L'Ami Jean in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, in which Stéphane Jégo, the Chef, let us into his kitchen and shared his passion for the taste of good things.

The GlenAllachie

Le 18 juillet dernier, en pleine canicule, je participais à une nouvelle dégustation en ligne sur Twitter (plus communément appelée : Tweet Tasting), animée par Steve Rush de The Whisky Wire pour découvrir la toute nouvelle gamme de la distillerie The GlenAllachie.
On July 18th, during a heat wave, I participated in a new online tasting on Twitter (more commonly called: Tweet Tasting), organized by Steve Rush of The Whisky Wire to discover the brand new range from The GlenAllachie Distillery.

Port Charlotte 10 ans

Quand une distillerie vous contacte pour vous proposer un échantillon du tout nouveau whisky qu'elle s'apprête à lancer sur le marché, ça fait toujours plaisir. Quand cette distillerie se trouve être Bruichladdich, l'intérêt grandi. Et quand le whisky en question n'est autre qu'un Port Charlotte de 10 ans d'âge et qu'il devient une expression permanente de leur gamme, l'excitation est à son comble. Je ne vous raconte même pas l'état dans lequel j'étais quand je me suis rendu compte que l'échantillon en question n'était autre qu'une bouteille de 70 cl, la même que vous pourrez trouver dans le commerce. Mais calmons-nous et reprenons nos esprit pour être sûr de rester objectif et honnête lors de la dégustation de ce single malt tourbé originaire de l'île d'Islay.
When a distillery contacts you to offer you a sample of the brand new whisky it is about to launch on the market, it's always a pleasure. When this distillery happens to be Bruichladdich, the interest grows. And when the whisky in question is no more than a Port Charlotte 10 years old which becomes a permanent expression of their range, the excitement is at its height. I do not even tell you the state in which I was when I realized that the sample in question was nothing other than a 70 cl bottle, the same one that you can find on the market. But let's calm down and get back on track to be sure to stay objective and honest when tasting this peaty single malt from Islay.

Figure emblématique de Douglas Laing & Co depuis près de 10 ans, Big Peat, cet autochtone de l'île d'Islay à la barbe touffue et aux cheveux portés par le vent et les embruns, donne sa force et son caractère à un des blended malts les plus réputés et des plus prisés des amateurs de tourbe. Il est rejoint, dans cet ultime article consacré au 70e anniversaire de la compagnie, par Jan Beckers (autre figure emblématique de Douglas Laing), ambassadeur de la marque et grand amateur de petits plats mitonnés, qui nous offre, pour l'occasion, sa recette de Ribs à la sauce BBQ aromatisée au Big Peat.
An emblematic figure of Douglas Laing & Co for nearly 10 years, Big Peat, a native of Islay Island with a bushy beard and hair worn by the wind and sprays, gives his strength and character to one of peat lovers most famous and most popular blended malts. He is joined in this final article devoted to the company's 70th anniversary, by Jan Beckers (other emblematic figure of Douglas Laing), Global Malt Ambassador and great lover of simmered dishes, who, for the occasion, offers us his Ribs with Big Peat BBQ sauce recipe.

C'est en 1948, trois ans après avoir servi dans la Royal Air Force, lors de la seconde Guerre Mondiale, que Fred Douglas Laing crée son entreprise qui, soixante-dix ans plus tard, sous la direction de son fils Fred Jr et de sa petite fille Cara, est devenue l'une des plus réputée au monde dans son domaine, à savoir : la création de blends et de blended malts ainsi que l'embouteillage indépendant de scotch single malt whisky et de single grain.
Three years after serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, in 1948, Fred Douglas Laing founded his company which, seventy years later, under the direction of his son Fred Jr. and his grand daughter Cara, has become one of the most famous in the world in its field, namely: the creation of blends and blended malts as well as the independent bottling of scotch single malt and single grain whiskies.

Dégustation - Kornog Sant Erwan

Le 19 mai, c'est la saint Yves. Le saint patron de la Bretagne, des professions de loi et ami et défenseur des pauvres. Pour lui rendre hommage, chaque année, chez Glann ar Mor, Jean Donnay sélectionne dans son chai deux fûts exceptionnels de Kornog (la version tourbée du single malt produit à la distillerie) qu'il embouteillera, l'un à 50% sous le nom de Sant Erwan (Saint Yves en Breton) et l'autre en brut de fût sous le nom de Sant Ivy. En attendant la version 2018 de ces éditions limitées, je vous propose mes notes de dégustation du Kornog Sant Erwan édition 2017.
On May 19th we celebrate Saint Yves. The patron saint of Brittany, professions of law and friend and defender of the poor. To pay tribute to him, each year at Glann ar Mor, Jean Donnay selects two exceptional Kornog casks (the peated version of the single malt produced at the distillery) in his warehouse, one bottled at 50% under the name Sant Erwan (Saint Yves in Breton) and the other one bottled at cask strength under the name Sant Ivy. While waiting for the 2018 version of these limited editions, here are my tasting notes for Kornog Sant Erwan 2017 edition.

Hunter Laing - Vive l'indépendance (6)

Mes récompenses 2017

Comme chaque année, voici la sélection des meilleurs whiskies qu'il m'a été donné de déguster entre le 1er janvier et le 31 décembre 2017, avec une petite exception près, puisque ma mignonette de Karuizawa 1964 de 48 ans a été ouverte le 13 janvier 2018 (la veille de mon 49e anniversaire – vidéo à venir, très bientôt), mais il méritait amplement de faire partie de ce palmarès…

As every year, here is the selection of the best whiskies I was able to taste from January 1st to December 31st 2017, with one small exception, since I opened my 48 years old 1964 Karuizawa mini on January 13th 2018 (the day before my 49th birthday – video to be published very soon), but it really deserved to be part of this list…
