Le 18 juillet dernier, en pleine canicule, je participais à une nouvelle dégustation en ligne sur Twitter (plus communément appelée : Tweet Tasting), animée par Steve Rush de The Whisky Wire pour découvrir la toute nouvelle gamme de la distillerie The GlenAllachie.
On July 18th, during a heat wave, I participated in a new online tasting on Twitter (more commonly called: Tweet Tasting), organized by Steve Rush of The Whisky Wire to discover the brand new range from The GlenAllachie Distillery.

Billy Walker est un monsieur très important dans l'univers du whisky. Cela fait pratiquement cinquante ans qu'il travaille dans ce milieu. Il est à l'origine de la réouverture des distilleries BenRiach et GlenDronach, qu'il racheta (avec l'aide d'investisseurs sud africains) respectivement en 2004 et en 2008 et ll deviend également propriétaire de Glenglassaugh en 2013. Il y a deux ans, après avoir revendu ces trois distilleries au géant américain Brown-Forman (propriétaire, entre autre, de Jack Daniels), Billy Walker s'est mis en quête de nouvelles aventures maltées.
Billy Walker is a very important gentleman in the whisky business. He has been working in this field for almost fifty years. He is behind the reopening of the BenRiach and GlenDronach distilleries, which he bought (with the help of South African investors) in 2004 and 2008, respectively, and he also became owner of the Glenglassaugh distillery in 2013. Two years ago, after selling these three distilleries to the American giant Brown-Forman (owner of Jack Daniels, among others), Billy Walker was looking for new malted adventures.

Ça ne lui aura pas pris trop longtemps, puisque c'est à l'été 2017 que le rachat de la distillerie Glenallachie est rendu public. Auparavant propriété de Chivas Brothers, elle-même détenue par le groupe Pernod Ricard, Glenallachie appartient désormais à un consortium à la tête duquel on retrouve Billy Walker. Glenallachie était peu connu en tant que single malt, car il était produit principalement pour des marques de blends. Cela donne au nouveau propriétaire toute latitude de création tant au niveau de la nouvelle identité visuelle que du profil aromatique de la gamme à venir.
It didn't took him too long, since it is in the summer of 2017 that the acquisition of the Glenallachie distillery was made public. Formerly owned by Chivas Brothers, itself owned by the Pernod Ricard Group, Glenallachie now belongs to a consortium headed by Billy Walker. Glenallachie was not very well known as a single malt, because it was produced mainly for blends. This gives the new owner all creative latitude both in terms of visual identity and in terms of flavour profile of the new range to come.

Les premières bouteilles de Glenallachie (six single casks de 26 à 39 ans d'âge – re-baptisé The GlenAllachie), sont sorties au printemps 2018 pour fêter le 50e anniversaire de cette (relativement) jeune distillerie. Un septième fût a été embouteillé spécialement pour le festival Spirit Of Speyside. Aujourd'hui, c'est la nouvelle gamme permanente qui est lancée sur le marché international. The first bottles of Glenallachie (six single casks from 26 to 39 years old – renamed The GlenAllachie), were released in the spring of 2018 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this (relatively) young distillery. A seventh cask was bottled especially for the Spirit Of Speyside whisky festival. Now, the new permanent range has been launched on the international market. The GlenAllachie 10 ans Cask Strength Batch 1 - 57,1%

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Dram numéro 1 The GlenAllachie 10 ans Cask Strength.
Riche au nez. Tout d'abord des arômes de chêne, de vanille, des pommes vertes et un soupçon d'huile d'olive. Ensuite, ça devient plus végétal/herbacé. Le nez change très rapidement. Probablement à cause de la température (27 ° C en ce moment).

Rich on the nose. 1st I’m getting oak, vanilla, green apples and a hint of olive oil. Then it’s getting more vegetal/herbaceous. Nose changes very quickly. Probably because of the temperature (27°C right now).

@dramming_uk : Le brut de fût fait vraiment ressortir les arômes. Ça évolue ! Toujours très floral. Une touche de talc parfumé et une sorte de dark marmelade (marmelade d'oranges amères au sucre muscovado) qui sort de l'ombre !
@SpiritAndWood : C'est certainement un de ceux qui ne cessent de muter dans le verre!
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Je trouve, aussi !
@dramming_uk : That cask strength really pushing the aromatics out. It's evolving! Still very floral. A touch of scented talcum powder and some dark marmalade emerging from the shadows!
@SpiritAndWood : It’s definitely one of those ones that keeps on mutating in the glass!

Ooooh ! I love this !

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Maintenant, en bouche, ce single malt brut de fût de 10 ans confirme sa richesse. C'est crémeux, épais, on pourrait presque le mâcher. Le chêne est très présent mais sans amertume. Des épices. Plein ! Malté. Sucré. Maintenant, j'ajoute quelques gouttes d'eau du Speyside @UisgeSource. Ça fait ressortir les notes fruitées sur ce dram. Pommes et poires juteuses au nez et caramel en bouche. Sympa !
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Now, on the palate, this10yo cask strength single malt confirms its richness. It’s creamy, thick, almost chewable. The oak is really present but no bitterness here. Spices. Plenty ! Malty. Sugary. #GlenAllachieWhisky

Now adding a few drops of @UisgeSource Speyside water. It enhances the fruity notes on this dram. Juicy apples and pears on the nose and toffee on the palate. Nice !

The GlenAllachie 12 ans - 46%

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Dram 2. The GlenAllachie 12 ans est complètement différent au nez. Plus doux mais un peu plus complexe aussi. Vraiment inhabituel Un peu aigre-doux. J'aime ça !
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Dram 2. The GlenAllachie 12 yo is completely different on the nose. More gentle but a bit more complex too. Really unusual. A bit sour. I like it !

@LaCaveDeCobalt : 12 ans. En bouche, il est dangereusement buvable. Tout ici est plus doux que dans le 10 ans. Des épices douces, plus de caramel ou de toffee, des pommes cuites au four, du chocolat au lait et des notes d'agrumes aussi.
@LaCaveDeCobalt : 12 yo. On the palate, it’s dangerously drinkable. Everything in here is sweeter than the 10yo. Sweet spices, more caramel or toffee, baked apples, milk chocolate and I’m getting some citrus notes too.

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Attention ! Ce GlenAllachie 12 ans se boit vraiment très facilement ! Il est dangereusement buvable !
@TheWhiskyWire : Je suis tout à fait d'accord avec Franck, un superbe dram qui s'avale un peu trop vite. Je ne sais jamais si c'est une bonne ou une mauvaise chose. ;)

The GlenAllachie 18 ans - 46%

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Oh mon dieu!  The GlenAllachie 18 ans est charnu au nez. J'adoooore les whiskies charnus. Celui-ci a aussi un nez aigre-doux. Je lui trouve des notes des chips au vinaigre au premier nez. Quelqu'un d'autre aussi ?
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Oh my ! @TheGlenAllachie 18 yo is meaty on the nose. I loooove meaty whiskies. This one has a sour nose too. I’m getting salt & vinegar crisps on first nose. Anyone else ?

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Maintenant, au nez, j'ai des notes de raisins secs marinés dans du Cognac. Miam !

@iheartwhisky : GlenAllachie 18 ans. Nez : très herbacé, le miel refait surface. Gentiment épicé. Peut-être un soupçon de fudge.
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Personne ne pourrait mieux le savoir que toi, "Reine du fudge" ! ;-)

J'aime sa viscosité huileuse sur la langue, sa sensation riche et épicée dans la gorge et sa longue finale en bouche. Et ce nez… Est-ce que je vous ai dit que j'aimais les whiskies charnus ?

I love its oily viscosity on the tongue, its rich and spicy feeling in the throat and its long finish in the mouth. And that nose… Did I tell you I love meatiness in my whisky ?

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Je me souviens du temps où vous pouviez acheter plein de single malts de 18 ans à environ 75 €, mais de nos jours, payer £92 pour un single malt de 18 ans à 46% de cette qualité me semble tout à fait honnête !
@LaCaveDeCobalt : I remember the times when you could get plenty of 18 yo single malts at around 75€, but nowadays, paying £92 for a 46% 18 single malt of this quality seems quite fair !

The GlenAllachie 25 ans - 48%

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Sur ce single malt The GlenAllachie de 25 ans, j'obtiens le même genre de nez charnu que sur le 18 ans, mais il semble plus subtil. Plus élégant, peut-être. Plus complexe aussi.
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Getting the same kind of meaty nose than the 18yo on this 25 year old The GlenAllachie single malt, but it seems more subtle. More elegant, maybe. More complex too.

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Je suis certain que celui-ci devrait être dégusté à une température ambiante inférieure à celle de mon bureau. J'aime garder mes bouteilles de whisky ouvertes au sous-sol où il fait environ 18/20° C toute l'année.
@LaCaveDeCobalt : I’m quite sure this one should be tasted at a lower room temperature than it is now in my study. I love to keep my opened bottles of whiskies in the basement where it’s around 20°C all year round.

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Eh bien, même à 26° C, The GlenAllachie 25 ans est un superbe dram! Texture soyeuse en bouche avec une sorte de sensation de cire sur la langue. Un whisky très riche et complexe pour le dessert.
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Well, even at 26°C, TheGlenAllachie 25 year old is a great dram ! Silky texture in the mouth with a kind of waxy feeling on the tongue. Very rich and complex dessert dram.

@LaCaveDeCobalt : 25 ans. Au palais : écorces d'oranges confites, toffee, chocolat et cuir. Il y a aussi une douce fraîcheur qui point en finale. De l'eucalyptus ou de la sève de pin. Mais tout en douceur, pas écrasante.
@LaCaveDeCobalt : 25 yo palate : Candied orange peels, toffee, chocolate & leather. There’s also a sweet freshness coming through on the finish. Eucalyptus or pine sap. But very gentle, not overwhelming.

The GlenAllachie 12 ans Cask 897 Spirit of Speyside - 58,9%

@LaCaveDeCobalt : Heureux de voir que les notes charnues sont présentes sur ce GlenAllachie single cask de 12 ans. Il est plus herbacé/végétal que le dernier que nous avons goûté, mais il se tient vraiment bien et on ne se rend vraiment pas compte qu'il titre 58,9% d'alcool. Bonne nuit tout le monde !
@LaCaveDeCobalt : Happy to find out the meaty notes are present on this 12 yo single cask @TheGlenAllachie whisky too. It’s more herbal/vegetal than the last one we tasted but it stands really well and you wouldn’t think it’s a 58,9% ABV dram. Good night everyone !

* En fait, je n'avais jamais goûté d'embouteillage officiel de GlenAllachie. En revanche, cet embouteillage de The Single Malts of Scotland avait déjà retenu toute mon attention !
In fact, I had never tasted an official bottling of GlenAllachie. However, this bottling from The Single Malts of Scotland had already caught my attention!
