Un trio de Compass Box

ENGLISH VERSION INCLUDED

It was during the last WhiskyLive in Paris that Compass Box unveiled to its French fans their brand new Myths & Legends trilogy. But let's go back to three other releases from this year that I had the pleasure to test for you.

AFFINITY

Announced on the 1st of April (we could have thought of a joke), Affinity is not a whisky. It is a vatting of whisky and Calvados. To achieve this "curiosity" (a world first, to my knowledge), John Glaser, Compass Box's boss and master blender, has selected Christian Drouin Calvados (which I have already talked about here).

AFFINITY - 46%
Couleur : Ambre claire
Color : Pale amber
Nez : alcoolisé. Pommes vanillées cuites au four. Viennoiseries.
Nose: alcoholic. Baked vanilla apples. Pastries.
Bouche : huileuse, chaleureuse et légèrement épicée. Tarte aux pommes chaude. Une certaine fraîcheur en fin de bouche.
Palate: oily, warm and slightly spicy. Hot apple pie. A certain freshness on the finish.
Finale : épicée et légèrement boisée.
Finish: spicy and slightly woody.
My opinion: Closer to a Calva than a whisky, Affinity should delight fans of young Calvados in search of new sensations.

THE CIRCLE

The Circle is a blended malt made in collaboration with Rosey Mitchell, the winner of the "The Circle" program, created by Compass Box to inspire bartenders. Mitchell wanted this whisky to be approachable, for sharing with friends. A whisky with a certain "brilliance" (according to its creator's words), to be enjoyed during the day. Made up from almost 80% of whisky aged in first-fill Bourbon barrels from the Tamdhu distillery, but also with other single malts (Clynelish, Dailuaine, Teaninich and an Orkney* peated whisky) matured in different types of casks (refill sherry, re-chared American oak, French oak…).

THE CIRCLE - 46%
Couleur : Or pale
Color : Pale gold
Nez : Gourmand, fruité et malté. Toffee. Vanille. Pâtisseries.
Nose : Gourmand, fruity and malty. Toffee. Vanilla. Pastries.
Bouche : offre ce que le nez promet. Gourmand. Pommes. Caramel. Avec une pointe de cire.
Mouth : offers what the nose promises. Gourmand. Apples. Caramel. With a touch of wax.
Finale : Fresh and very slightly peppery with a note of peanut shell.
Mon avis : Un whisky sympa, sans prétentions. Parfait pour l'apéro.
My opinion : A nice, unpretentious whisky. Perfect for the aperitif.

NO NAME N°2

After the success of its No Name whisky, Compass Box reiterates the experience of the nameless peated whisky. One of the most peated one made by the London based blender, it seems. The No Name N° 2 is mainly composed of Caol Ila (75.5%), Talisker (10.5%) and Clynelish (13.5%). The remaining 0.5% coming from various Highland malts.

NO NAME N°2
Couleur : Paille
Color : Straw
Nez : Tourbe. Goudron. Réglisse.
Nose: Peat. Tar. Licorice.
Bouche : Belle texture huileuse. D’abord sucrée, puis fraîche (eucalyptus, sève de pin). Un petit côté fermier (paille/foin).
Palate: Nice oily texture. First sweet, then fresh (eucalyptus, pine sap). A kind of a farm character (straw/hay).
Finale : Tourbée. Fumée avec des notes de réglisse.
Finish: Peated. Smoky with hints of liquorice.
My opinion: A beauty of a whisky ! A blended malt made for connoisseurs as well as newcomers who would like to learn about peated whiskies. A very well done whisky made by Compass Box!

* Orkney having only two distilleries, and knowing that Scapa does not use peated barley, there is a very good chance that this whisky's from Highland Park.

Merci à Compass Box pour les échantillons.
Many thanks to Compass Box for the samples.
